▸THE TEXAS POINTS SYSTEM

Think of your "Driver's License Points" as a bank account. Every Texas Driver's License holder begins with zero points in their individual account - regardless of the class of license they hold (Class A, Class B or Class C). Most "Motor Vehicle Control" violations include a points penalty if the operator is convicted of the allegation (click here for a list of violations that include points if convicted). If a driver ever reaches six (6) points in their account in any three (3) year period, SURCHARGE PENALTIES will be due to keep their license.Once a conviction has been added to a driver record, points are added to the license holder's balance and the conviction will remain on the driver record for three (3) years from the date of conviction. The points are removed after three (3) years from the date of the original conviction - NOT the date of the ticket - but when the conviction was reported to DPS.Click here to order a Texas Driver Record to learn how many points may be on your record. A citation (for speeding or any other alleged traffic violation) is actually a formal summons for you to appear at court and answer the allegation against you. If you fail to appear by the date listed on the citation, you can be issued a new ticket and warrants for your immediate arrest will likely issue. You have the constitutional right to be represented by an attorney if you so choose - which means in most cases, we can appear for you.Our experienced and professional attorneys aggressively defend you against any alleged traffic violation. We will explain all your options for disposition or trial – and you get to decide how we will proceed – the choice is always yours, but we’re here to help you understand the consequences of whatever decision you make. DON'T EVER PLEAD GUILTY without first understanding what it will mean to your driving record. A ticket is only an accusation you violated a traffic law - IT IS NOT a finding of guilt by itself!

Convictions for tickets involving "Motor Vehicle Control" can have a very serious impact on your driving record, Auto Insurance Rates and even your ability to obtain or keep a Texas Driver's License under the Texas Driver Responsibility Program (Texas Points System).

If you’re convicted of a traffic ticket – meaning a ticket or citation is reported to Texas DPS and is “On Your Record,” and the alleged offense involves "Motor Vehicle Control" – you will likely be forced to pay fines and court costs, and YOU WILL HAVE POINTS added to your driver's license.

If you have multiple convictions reported to DPS inside any three-year period, or you're convicted for “Driving Without Valid Insurance”, “No Driver's License”, or “Driving While License Suspended or Invalid”, your license could end up getting SUSPENDED, or you could be forced to pay State-mandated PENALTY FEES to avoid a suspension of your license.
